Victorian Stroll Garden
Private Garden – Wicker Park, Chicago, Illinois
Like many historic homes of the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago, this Victorian home dates back to the late 1800s. The initial design process focused on gaining an understanding of Victorian architecture and accompanying landscapes of the time. The home consists of limestone, brownstone, red clay brick, slate, copper, iron and highly ornate wood detailing. The complexity of the home’s materials attributed to the final material selections for the landscape. Antique brick walks, flagstone curbing, limestone slab steps, and bluestone inlays are the structural makeup of the garden. The highly ornate iron fence and gates were restored and replicated from the original design. The planting design accentuates the strong architectural lines present in the home. Clipped boxwood hedges surround a mixed, free-flowing palette of Peony, Rhododendron, and a lush massing of perennials. The final garden design achieves multiple uses in a highly confined space, including an intimate sitting area, a larger conversation ring, and a garden walk which encourages strolling.
