Urban Dwelling
Private Garden – Lincoln Park, Chicago, Illinois

Nestled in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, this project balances the formality of its architecture with a livable landscape catered to get-togethers with friends and family. Granite and limestone walls provide structure to the front garden and help to anchor the stately Georgian facade. Four Winterking Hawthorns define the front entryway as a gathering space before ascending to the home. A recessed lawn area with perennial borders is used as a recreation area for the family. Green Velvet Boxwood, Annabelle Hydrangea, Clematis, Helleborus, Astilbe, Lady’s Mantle and other shade loving perennials were designed to break up the strong architectural lines of the surrounding wall. In the rear yard, there are multiple levels of entertaining space: a lawn panel lined with European Hornbeams for privacy from the alley; a dining terrace with a bluestone herringbone rug and a barbeque area;  a rooftop terrace with a brick fireplace and a decorative wooden pergola is surrounded by lush planters for lounging with family and friends.
