Indiana Beach House
Private Garden – Long Beach, Indiana
The Georgian-style home, located in Long Beach, Indiana, dates back to the early 1900’s. The property is now owned by a businessman whose goal was to escape with his family from the everyday city life of downtown Chicago. The home sits on three-quarters of an acre and contains several historic garden elements desirable for restoration. The original wrought iron fence and entry gates, part of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, were carefully restored to their former glory. The existing grotto pond was also restored and enlarged to create a family memorial garden. Tuscan influences, very much treasured by the client, can be seen throughout the garden. The pea gravel driveway extends right up to the front entry stairs and porch, creating a welcoming experience for visitors. A pair of low columns with oversized Italian terracotta bowls adorn the circle drive and frame an entryway to the front lawn. In the rear yard, a long wooden pergola and large terracotta urns impart a romantic character to the pool terrace and formal dining area. Mature Arborvitae are scattered throughout the landscape to emulate the upright form of Cypress trees seen throughout the Italian countryside.
