English Manor
Private Garden – Winnetka, Illinois

After undergoing an intense renovation and rear addition, this English Manor home was transformed into a beautiful showpiece. Located in Winnetka, the master plan for this property involved a close collaboration between Culliton Quinn, the homeowner, architect, and civil engineer. Much of the rear yard sits in the 100-year floodplain which posed a major design challenge for the home as well as the landscape. The rear yard was dropped in elevation to create the necessary compensatory storage and a significant sports-type drainage system was installed to maintain a firm, dry lawn. Formal garden spaces were raised above the lawn panel elevation with gravel walks connecting one space to the next. The front yard was designed to allow the house to breathe. Beverly Crabapples, masses of Grey Owl Juniper, and Annabelle Hydrangea create an understated plant palette for the front yard. A custom picket fence and stone columns, mimicking the façade stone, provide the beautiful framework to display the stunning architecture of the home.
