Private Garden – Lincoln Park, Chicago, Illinois
Located in the historic Burling Row House District of Chicago, this project had quite limited space requiring a highly functional design for entertaining and everyday use. Utilizing the existing Washington Hawthorn and Sycamore canopy along with a newly detailed lattice fence, the design creates a private and restful backyard haven for the homeowner. The strong connection of the garage façade to the fence creates a seamless transition of color while making interesting background texture to the garden space. Local hardscape selections utilized for the garden include Wisconsin flagstone as the walk and banding details with reclaimed Chicago clay pavers as the contrasting terrace in-fill material. Shade-loving Hosta and Heuchera varieties, Lady’s Mantle, and Astilbe provide a lush contrast of color and texture with the stone and brick terrace. Several groupings of clay pots, planted with annuals, are scattered throughout the garden to further soften the hardscapes.
