A.N. Pritzker School
Public Work – Chicago Public School Campus Master Plan
Pritzker is a K-8 school with a playground area comprised of nearly ninety percent asphalt and concrete surfaces. As our first school project, the design phase was completed pro-bono based on our interest in greening the school grounds to provide a more enjoyable space for students. Our design concepts explored numerous ways of defining the school yard with areas for active and passive recreation as well as instructive learning. The master plan introduces a large lawn area with running loop, outdoor classrooms, soft play courts for young children, and a hard play court for basketball, foursquare, and other activities. Student interaction is encouraged with intimate seating areas for reading/studying and larger areas for gathering with friends. Border plantings reflect a low maintenance, native planting scheme with a much-needed tree canopy and large swaths of prairie wildflowers, sedges, and ornamental grasses.
